Seattle has a reputation as an expensive city, but many of its best experiences cost nothing at all. Whether you live here or are visiting on a budget, here are 15 free things to do in Seattle, from waterfront parks to public art and gardens.

Parks and views

1. Kerry Park

This small park on the south slope of Queen Anne Hill offers the classic postcard view of the Seattle skyline, the Space Needle and, on clear days, Mount Rainier. Go at sunset or after dark for city lights.

2. Discovery Park

Seattle’s largest park, in Magnolia, combines forest trails, meadows, beaches and views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains. The loop trail is a great introduction, and the walk down to the West Point Lighthouse is a local favorite.

3. Gas Works Park

Built around the remains of an old gasification plant on the north shore of Lake Union, Gas Works Park is one of the city’s most unusual green spaces. Climb the grassy hill for views of downtown and watch seaplanes land on the lake.

4. Alki Beach

In West Seattle, Alki Beach has a long waterfront path that is perfect for walking, biking or skating, with skyline views across Elliott Bay.

5. Olympic Sculpture Park

Run by the Seattle Art Museum, this outdoor park on the waterfront in Belltown displays large sculptures with views of the Sound and the Olympic Mountains. It is free and open to the public.

Gardens and quiet spots

6. Kubota Garden

This peaceful Japanese-style garden in the Rainier Beach neighborhood features ponds, bridges and winding paths. It is free to visit and rarely crowded.

7. Washington Park Arboretum

Next to the University of Washington, the Arboretum offers miles of trails among trees and plants from around the world. Walking the grounds is free. Note that the Japanese Garden inside the Arboretum charges its own admission.

8. Waterfall Garden Park

Hidden in Pioneer Square, this tiny park has a striking man-made waterfall and is a calm spot to take a break while exploring downtown.

Culture and history

9. Seattle Central Library

The downtown library is an architectural landmark and a great place to spend an hour. Take the escalators to the upper floors for views.

10. Frye Art Museum

On First Hill, the Frye Art Museum offers free admission to its galleries and exhibitions.

11. Ballard Locks

At the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in Ballard, you can watch boats move between Lake Washington and Puget Sound. In season, you may also see salmon through the windows of the fish ladder viewing room. The botanical garden next to the locks is free as well.

12. First Thursday Art Walk

On the first Thursday of each month, galleries in and around Pioneer Square open their doors for a free evening art walk.

Neighborhood fun

13. Pike Place Market

You do not need to spend money to enjoy Pike Place Market. Walk the arcades, watch the fishmongers and street performers, and take in the views of Elliott Bay.

14. The Fremont Troll

Under the north end of the Aurora Bridge, this giant concrete troll clutching a real car is one of Seattle’s most photographed pieces of public art.

15. The Seattle waterfront

The downtown waterfront along Elliott Bay is an easy place for a long walk, with views of ferries coming and going and the Olympic Mountains on clear days.
